What causes primary bone cancer?
As with most of the cancers, the exact cause of primary bone cancers is unknown. Here are some of the possibilities:
- Treatment with radiotherapy for other cancer or any other problem.
- Some long term diseases like Paget’s disease, Li-Fraumeni syndrome, hereditary multiple exostoses (HME), Ollier’s disease
- Some non cancerous tumors of bone like chondromas, sometimes can evolve in cancerous tumors.
- inheritence offaulty gene which causes retinoblastoma.
What are the symptoms of primary bone cancer?
Symptoms of primary bone cancer depends on type of cancer, site involved and size of cancer growth. General features of all the cancers are weight loss, apetite loss, malaise, insomnia etc..
- Pain and Tenderness. Initially starts with vague discomfort and dull pain butgradually becomes more localized and with tenderness and growth may be visible.
- Swelling: Swelling may not be visible in initial phase and if the cancer affecting deeper structures but latter it becomes quite obvious.
- Movement restriction and disability may develop if cancer destroys surrounding connective tissues.
- Sometimes tumor presses nerves nearby and can give nerve pain and/or numbness.
- Bone affected with cancer tends to break very easily and there may be recurrent fractures.
