Does Acne change with weather?

As such it is very well mentioned in standard books and literature that Acne seems to get worsen in winter and get better in summer. But studies done so far to prove this have very extreme results and misleading. One study, in Journal of Dermatology in 2002, looked at 452 people with acne and found that 56 per cent said they had worse symptoms in the summer. Only 11 per cent experienced more outbreaks in the winter.

But another study published the same year found the reverse: of 220 people with acne, a majority said it worsened in the winter and improved in the summer. Earlier, studies has similar finding.

If symptoms do wane in the summer, it may have something to do with increased exposure to sunlight. Studies have found that light, particularly ultraviolet light, destroys an acne-causing substance called porphyrins.

But Dr Sumayah Jamal, a dermatologist at New York University, cautioned against sunbathing, which exposes people to cancer-causing light wavelengths, to ease symptoms. “If you visit a dermatologist’s office,” she said, “they can deliver specific, non-harmful wavelengths that can be beneficial” in treating acne.”

So it suggest that many of acne patient experience worsening symptoms in different seasons but to use seasonal variation to treat your acne may be dangerous as well.
