What causes of Acne? ( causes of Acne)

The main pathology of acne is enlargement of sebaceous gland and increased production of sebum also called oil. As with most of the skin diseases the cause of acne is unknown, but one most believed hypothesis is rising level of androgens (male sex hormones). Under the influence of rising androgen during puberty, sebaceous gland enlarge and forms more sebum which ultimately leads to formation of acne. Also believed theories about hereditary and genetic nature of acne also has some proof with positive family history most of the time.

Things like spicy food, chocolate, humid environment often gets blame for acne development but there is no support or evidence for their etiological role.

Apart from puberty, all the causes where androgen production increases can cause acne like Polycystic Ovarian Disease, and tumors of ovary and adrenal gland. Also chemical called halogenated hydrocarbons is also has a role in development of Acne.

Factors that worsens Acne development and Prognosis

Certain factors can precipitates Acne flare and will have impact on long term prognosis as well.All the physiological situations that has role in fluctuation of hormone levels can flare up Acne. In women Menstruation (Acne) and Pregnancy (Acne) are the main two factors which can flare up Acne. Acne usually starts 2 to 3 days before menstruation and stays for 1 or 2 days after. Also starting Oral Contraceptive Pills also can worses Acne.

Certain Make-Up materials also has role in worsening Acne and it will be advisable to stop them for few months just to rule out it for the cause of acne. Stress is also believed to be an important factor in acne.

Few other contributing factors are hot humid environment, tight clothes, excessive sweating, steroid treatment, and few drugs like androgens, lithium, and barbiturates. Rubbing,peeling of immature acne is also an important contributer of worsening acne.
