Acne Treatment and Acne Skin Care

There are mainly two types of treatment available and which form you require depends mainly on severity and extent of Acne. Main objectives of treatment is to treat underlying inflamation and prevent extensive sacrring. Usually mild form of Acne does not require any treatment. Remember that extensive Acne takes long to get cured and you may need to continue your treatment for months. Stopping of treatment immaturely may not help you and take treatment a s doctor advices. Sometimes it is also become necessary to continue with maintenance treatment even after Acne has been cured.

1) Topical Preparations: Benzoyl peroxide, Retinoids, Topical antibiotics, Azelaic acid
2) Oral Tablet Preparation:

Topical Preparations for Acne ( Creams, Vitamins, Products)

Benzoyl Peroxide
Most commonly used and effective solution for acne. Best way to use it is after 30 minutes of skin wash. Main action is it reduces inflammation and kiils bacteria along with cleaning of pores, so helpful in Acne which is severely inflamed or associated with secondary bacterial infection. It is available in market in various strength and you are adviced to contact skin specialist to know which strength is best for you.
Common Side effects of Acne Treatment with Benzoyl Peroxide are mild skin irritation, and colors your hair. Common practice is to start with lowest possible strength and gradually increasing it till you start getting irritation and settle down at one step below. Also duration is gradually increased till you start feeling irritation.

Retinoids
Retinoids are usually given for mild to moderate Acne and Acne with slight inflammation. It does not have bacteria killing action so not useful in Acne infected with secondary bacterial infection though you can add topical antibiotic along with it. There are numerous retinoids preparations available in market and adapalene, tretinoin, and isotretinoin are few of the trade names.
These are good at unplugging blocked pores. They include which come in various brand names. They also have some effect on reducing inflammation.
Remember that on starting retinoids you may feel your skin peeling and spots worsening initially but this gradually settles down over a period of time. Most commonly felt side effects are burning, irritation, and dryness. To avoid sunlight hypersensitivity avoid using in a day time or use sun protection cream and start with lower strength and gradually increase to higher strengths. It is harmful to fetus if used during pregnancy so avoid if you planning to become pregnant or you think that you can be pregnant.

Topical antibiotics

As such it does not clear pores so has limited usability and only used to clear inflammation or secondary infection. Side effects depends upon individual content but usually less than others.

Azelaic acid

It cleans skin pores and also reduces inflammation in lesser amount so it is very helpful alternative to benzoyl peroxide in person who has severe skin irritation to it.

Tablets as Acne Treatment

Antibiotic tablets
ANTIBIOATICS tableta reduces inflammation and kills bactera but do not have any effects in opening or cleaning pores so use this mode of treatment only if there is severe inflammation and spots around acne. Also combining it with topical potent pores opener will be very useful in severe acne associated with scars and spots. The commonly used antibiotics are of Tetracycline group like oxytetracycline, tetracycline, doxycycline, lymecycline and minocycline.

Read manufacturers leaflet for its information and side effects but in general these drugs are not suitable for Children under 12 years,
pregnant, breastfeeding females, and avoid taking it with contraception, Food and milk,

Oral Contraceptive Pills are sometimes used to regulate imbalance in hormones and may be helpful if pathology is related to hormones only.

Isotretinoin tablets

As such very useful in severe form of Acne but has serious side effects and should be taken with doctors advice only.

Duration of treatment for Acne

It may take 8 to 12 weeks for you to see an improvement in your acne. Treating acne is a slow process. During the first few weeks of treatment you may notice that your acne seems to get worse. This is because the medicine is working on pimples that you may not yet see. Be patient, do not get discouraged. Continue to use your medicine as directed. If you do not feel well and you are taking medicine, call your doctor or nurse.

Taking care of your Skin for Acne

  • Avoid cleaning too aggressively and too frequently. There is no evidence that aggressive cleaning improves Acne. But sometimes it may aggravate your acne. @ times in a day is more than enough.
  • Avoid using scrub on Acne skin as it may damage it and may aggravate it. instead clean it with gentle hands. Use only clean like warm water.There is no role for hard antiseptic wash or strong soaps.
  • Blackheads are usual normal melanin manufactured in skin and is not harmful to you so never try to remove it by heavy cleaning and scrubbing.
  • Try to avoid heavy makeup on your acne affected skin to hide peeling of skin as it may aggravate acne.
  • Always use water based moisturizers skin cream and avoid using oil based creams.
