Types of Primary Bone Cancers

There are different varieties of bone cancer (primary) and their classification is based on types of cells involved in the cancer. Most common variety of primary bone cancer is Sarcoma. Sarcoma is cancer of cells which manufactures connective tissue like bone, cartilge, ligaments etc..
- Osteosarcoma :most common type of primary bone cancer even though incidence is very low in general population. This cancer is due to abnormal multiplication of cells which produces bone. Common features*young people between the ages of 10 to 25, but can occur at any age.*develops in the growing ends of the bone , like bones next to the knee.
- Ewing’s sarcoma This is named after the doctor who first described it in the 1920’s. This type of cancer is much more common in males than in female and has tendency to affect young people and most commonly affects the pelvis, thigh bone (femur) and the shin bone (tibia).
- Chondrosarcoma This type of cancer arises from cartilage forming cells has tendency to affect middle aged person. It is very slow growing tumor and can develop within a bone, or on the surface of a bone. Most common involvement is pelvis, shoulder blade (scapula), ribs and the upper part of the arms (humerus) and legs (femur).
- Chordoma extremely rare variety of primary bone cancer which usually starts in spine bones or in neck. Has mre tecndency to affect males in his 40s to 50s and is very slow growing.
- Other Few rare types of primary bone tumour include angiosarcoma, fibrosarcoma, leiomyosarcoma, malignant fibrous histiocytoma, and chordoma.
