Low estrogen is a risk factor for Osteoarthritis

As such osteoporosis is very common among post menopausal women is widely accepted all over the world. But recent studies have shown that premenopausal women who has law levels of estrogen are also prone to develop Osteoarthritis. The researchers studies over 800 women, close to 75 per cent who were premenopausal. Blood estrogen levels in women with knee osteoarthritis was about 15 per cent lower than in those without arthritis.
Earlier an article published in Americal Journal of Rheumatology have shown that there is variation in sex for development of osteoarthritis and have shown that sex hormones, or alterations in these hormones associated with menopause, may contribute to the development arthritis.

Researchers also said that the results of this study does not mean that we should start HRT or estrogen therapy but there is huge scope for further studies that needs to be done before commencing any modalities of treatment.
