Is Age and Sex Important as risk factor for Accidents?

All over the world vehicular accidents has been the major cause of noninfectious diseases deaths and is much worse in developing countries where road conditions and rules are still not proper. But at the same time relationship between different demographic factors and vehicular accidents is also very important. There is numerous variations in age and sex of drivers all over the world and to find out this factors and their risk association with accidents is equally important to avoid serious injuries and mortalities.

Studies carried out in  Purdue University in Indiana, US suggested that there is significant variations in severity of injuries between male and female group as well three age groups.

As such there is no convincing data available about why these variation is there but still very helpful for preventing measures. Some of the conclusions of the study includes

  1. Mortality is haighest among older than younger.
  2. Driver fatality in vehicle with more than two passengers is higher in young age group than older age group.
  3. Vehicle of more than 5 year old age found to have higher mortality in younger than olders.
  4. Similarly there were few conclusion that alcohol, falling asleep, rural setting increases the risk of fatality.

We can put many speculation for this conclusions but there is no scientific evidence for reasons behind these reasons.
