Chlorination as risk factor for cancer
As such chlorination is one of the most effective method for water purification and is being widely used in developing countries. Even in many developed countries itis primary method for purification of water. But for last few months few companies who manufacture water filters started campaign against chlorination and published that chlorine can cause certain types of cancers. So it was become necessary to do study on this issue. And to surprise to everyone results are in favor of manufacturers too.
Scientists say chlorination can produce at least one group of chemical byproducts, trihalomethanes, that are considered carcinogenic. But studies over the years have differed on whether levels of these compounds in tap water adversely affect health.

Meta Analysis of many small studies linked long-term consumption of chlorinated water to small increases in the rates of bladder cancer, particularly in men. The analyses adjusted for other risk factors, like age, socioeconomic status and smoking.
But now the question is the risk of unchlorinated water and is advantage overweighs disadvantage or not. For many developing and underdeveloped countries like India and China this seems to be most effective way of water purification and advantage overweighs disadvantage. And till other equally effective methods of chlorination becomes available it will be the only method.
